TRCSL will introduce the Number Portability facility within Srilanka
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), with the approval of the Institutional Development Fund (IDF) under the World Bank, has taken steps to introduce this feature called Mobile Number Portability or MNP in Sri Lanka.
The aim of introducing the MNP service is to enable customers to switch to another service provider, such as Mobitel or Hutch, without changing the phone number used by their customers. This capability is now available in many countries around the world, giving the user complete freedom to use the package of their choice, and creating a more competitive service market.
Measures are being taken to enforce the system for both mobile numbers and fixed lines and the TRCSL said it hopes to hold discussions in this regard with service providers as well. The technology will be implemented soon on each service provider.
